This work represents a small portion of the incredible system of trenches that transformed the landscape, the futility of losses that can no longer be seen. As we embrace and forgive the past, now those scars are healing, the land is reclaiming them, too fierce a landscape to tame with agriculture, the wind and rain, ashes and dust on the wind, the very earth takes those born of the earth back, furnishing the trees and shrubs now sending their growing roots into the poor soil made richer by the lives lost there. Like pawns on a chessboard, they persevered until they reached the other side…”
